- Shop the seed catalogues! The seed suppliers are putting out their new seed catalogues so this is the perfect time to order those catalogues and begin ordering your seeds for the upcoming growing season
- Planning your garden! On those cold days when you’re looking out the window at your garden, thinking about your successes and perhaps the failures (because, let’s face it, we’ve all had them) in your garden this past season, break out a pencil and paper and begin sketching out new ideas for your garden space. Play with ideas that add more color, texture and interest. Or perhaps you are planning your vegetable garden – think about what grew best and what yielded the best harvest.
- Read and research! Visit your local library and take advantage of the tons of books available on the subject of gardening. Learn a new gardening technique – maybe you are interested in Water Gardening or Xeriscaping, or simply brush up on your pruning techniques.
- Inspecting your trees for damage. When trees have dropped their leaves it is the perfect time to look up into your trees to check for broken branches and disease. Dead, diseased and damaged wood should be removed – when in doubt call an arborist.
- Mulch your beds. Any beds that are currently bare – veggies beds, perennial beds, etc, can benefit from a layer of mulch applied (such as leaf mulch). Leafs mulch can then be easily raked into the bed before spring planting.
- Plant garlic! Garlic can be planted up until March. This is a perfect time to get this great veggie in the ground!
